I read this in a Paragon Micropedia (1999) about Great Civilisations, so I thought I'd share it with you all because it did interest me.
The first ever Christians were actually Jews, who created a sect which was apposed to the formal Jewish priestly traditions and the decadence and materialism in ancient Israel's cities. It attracted many non-Jews such as Roman soldiers, and its main principles were mainly created by Paul of Tarsus (AD 3 to 68); originally an Orthodox Jew (who differed from early Christians because they did not see Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah) who was strongly apposed to this new faith, but was however converted after a vision he saw on the road to Damascus in Syria.
Intriguing.
